Hopefully all you little monsters (and even non-little monsters!) have seen Lady GaGa's latest video. And if you HAVEN'T, you must watch it NOW on http://www.ladygaga.com or http://www.youtube.com/ladygagavevo! Now, I have a LOT to say about this video. First of all, I have watched it twice, read over fifty pages of comments (yes, I have THAT much free time on my hands), and I'm still not sure of the deeper meaning. On her Larry King interview, she said that
"[It's about the] purity of my friendships with my gay friends, and how I've been unable to find that with a straight man in my life. It's a celebration and an admiration of gay love—it confesses my envy of the courage and bravery they require to be together. In the video I'm pining for the love of my gay friends—but they just don't want me to be with them."
I knew beforehand that the video would be about these themes, but it was hard to see it. Now that I've watched it a few times, I do see the pining for her gay friends element quite clearly. All the sexual innuendo on the cots, the stripping, etc. The thing that freaked me out, though, is what people are saying about the religious symbolism. Listen, people--LADY GAGA IS NOT A DEVIL WORSHIPPER. GEEZ. In the video, she DOES swallow a cross rosary and have an upside down cross over her crotch in one scene, but stop posting all this crazy crap WITHOUT knowing the facts. In her Larry King interview, she also said this--
"I'm very religious. I was raised Catholic. I believe in Jesus. I believe in God. I'm very spiritual. I pray very much. But at the same time, there is no one religion that doesn't hate or speak against or be prejudiced against another racial group or religious group, and -- or sexual group. For that, I think religion is also bogus, so I suppose you could say I'm a quite religious woman that is very confused about religion. And I dream and envision a future where we have a more peaceful religion or a more peaceful world, a more peaceful state of mind for the younger generation. And that's what I dream for."
What's that? Lady GaGa believes in JESUS and GOD? Lady GaGa PRAYS? A LOT? Lady GaGa is RELIGIOUS? It's all true, which leads me to wonder why everyone is thinking she's some psycho devil worshipper. About the swallowing the rosary, I do think that symbolized something, but not something bad. Before she swallows the necklace, the necklace is binding her hands together. I think her swallowing the cross symbolizes her getting rid of the ties of religion that restrict so many people in this world, such as the gay community (see how this is all connecting?). I am in no way saying that religion is bad, I am a very faithful person, and Lady GaGa is also a faithful and religious person, but I'm just saying that some people, even certain religions, do view gay people as bad, and that they shouldn't be on this world, which she's trying to point out. That's why she admires them so much. They do have a lot of bravery that many of us don't have, even Lady GaGa. They are willing to stand up and show that they will love whoever they may choose, and they will do so with pride. You don't have to like Lady GaGa, but there's no reason to say things like that when you don't fully understand the meaning, or especially, accuse someone who has done so much for us like Lady GaGa of doing something so terrible. I have to say, I don't like this video as much as the rest of her videos, but I feel this video has taught me a valuable lesson, or at least help me see things in a new light.

Great post Kira! I haven't watched the video but you've piqued my interest and now I will.
ReplyDeleteI have to say that knowing how passionate Lady Gaga is about gay rights and racial and religious equality makes me like her even more. It's good to see someone as famous as her using her influence to protect the rights of others!
Kira, because the new vid isn't available to watch on mobile, which I'm reading on tonight, I haven't seen it yet. In spite of that, your commentary and analysis seem very well-thought-out to me. I'll keep your thoughts in mind when I do get to see it!
ReplyDeleteKira, this is great! You're a fantastic writer. And so insightful!
